Frequently asked questions

General questions

Mivoq provides speech synthesis facilities (Text-To-Speech or TTS). By means of its services it is possible to make your electronic devices to read any text. Mivoq provides both off-the-shelf professional voices and ad-hoc custom voices using the personalization service.

The Mivoq personalization service is a service that allows any user to create his/her own personal digital voice (synthetic voice). To create a personal digital voice, an user should read aloud a few sentences, using a voice recording service. Mivoq systems will automatically build the user digital voice. The voice will be able to read even those words that have never been pronounced by the user.

The personalization service works with tens of sentences. However the voice quality will depend on several factors, including the number of sentences that have been read and the quality of the recordings. For a good result it is reccomended to record the sentences in a silent environment, using a good microphone and to record at least one hundred sentences (usually fortyfive minutes is enough to complete the recording phase).

Mivoq services allows users to be represented by their own voice in contexts where they are not usually present (e.g., a virtual assistant will be able to answer with the voice of the user, when the user is not able to answer). In this case we prefer to talk about user digital voices rather than synthetic voices, in order to emphasize that these are in fact users own voices.

Hardware and software requirements

Any microphone that is working with your system is enough, however, the quality of the digital voice will depend on the quality of your microphone and setup. You can check if your microphone is working at wavesurfer-js.org or at onlinemictest.com.

On smartphone you can use latest version of Chrome mobile, most of the other browsers do not yet offer enough audio recording capabilities. On desktop and laptops you can use most of the browsers. With the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome and Opera you will not need any addon to use the service. Internet Explorer and Safari can also be used but require Flash Player.

Common issues

The most probable reason is that you have not authorised microphone access. Try to reload the recording page and check for this kind of requests from the browser.

With Chrome you should also check the protocol used by the browser as Chrome will inhibit the microphone on insecure connections. Check that https is in use, as shown in picture
